Yamaha 2022 XSR900 Sports Heritage Motorcycle – Features
Top Features
The new Yamaha 2022 XSR900 Sports Heritage Motorcycle offers from every perspective the next-generation Yamaha XSR900 has a distinctive appearance. There is a specific modern design aspect highlighting the machine’s high-performance potential with the tank shape, exposed aluminum frame and side silhouette giving clear inspiration from classic Yamaha race bikes of the past. Drilled fork caps machined headlamp stays, forged brake pedal, hidden passenger pegs, blacked-out levers, bar-end mirrors, darkened brake reservoirs, embossed aluminum rear underplate, and beautiful aluminum XSR logo all combine to show modernism and a high level of fit and quality.
The 890cc cross-plane crankshaft three-cylinder engine of the XSR900 is more potent with a more substantial more linear torque curve for exceptional acceleration. Nearly every significant component from pistons and connecting rods to the crankshaft, camshafts and crankcase has been reworked and lightened to give the engine a more free-revving nature. Yamaha engineers meticulously revised the intake system combining various cross-section and length air ducts. Hence, induction noises resonate harmoniously at varying wavelengths to enhance the unique symphony of the crossplane triple-cylinder powertrain. Two functional air intake vents on either side of the fuel tank improve the mid-and high-rpm induction sound that reaches the rider giving the rider a better sense of acceleration. A state-of-the-art six-axis Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) with two sensors that detect three-axis angular velocity and three-axis acceleration elevates 2022 XSR900 to new levels of technological innovation.
The data is sent to the ECU, which controls a lean-sensitive Traction Control System, front Wheel Lift Control System (LIF) Slide Control System (SCS), and Brake Control (BC) System with lean-sensitive ABS among other rider aids. Depending on the rider’s preference, each can be modified for different levels of intervention or turned off completely. Yamaha’s Controlled Filling (CF) die-cast technique creates the new compact lightweight aluminum frame making complicated frame structures lighter and stronger than traditional casting methods. Overall weight is lowered while the balance of longitudinal, lateral and torsional rigidity has been adjusted, boosting straight-line stability and transmitting great feedback to the rider.
New sporty 10-spoke aluminum wheels with Yamaha’s proprietary spin forming technology improve appearance while drastically lowering unsprung weight. As a result, the suspension action is enhanced and the moment of inertia has reduced that resulting in a more responsive feel especially during cornering and braking. The Quick Shift System (QSS) from the XSR900 is now standard on the 2022 XSR900. This system makes full-on acceleration more exhilarating by enabling quick clutchless shifting up and down the gearbox. It also makes downshifting faster and smoother with less chassis disruption while changing gears.
Engine
An all-new Yamaha 2022 XSR900 Sports Heritage Motorcycle has a new 890cc liquid-cooled three-cylinder DOHC fuel-injected (YCC-T) engine that has a bore stroke of 78 mm and an 11.5:1 compression ratio for excellent torque and power delivery. The bike has every engine component that has been rebuilt to be lighter from the pistons and connecting rods through the crankshaft, camshafts and crankcase. The fracture-split method in which the big-end ring of the connecting rod is purposely shattered and then reassembled is used to provide an unsurpassed level of manufacturing accuracy in the forged connecting rods.
When the rods are put together around the crankshaft, the result is a pair of entirely matching halves that produce a far more precise mating surface. The three-cylinder bores of the CP3 engine are mounted forward towards the exhaust side. The direct-plated ceramic-composite cylinder bores provide superior heat dissipation and reduced friction. At the same time, the offset minimizes piston to cylinder wall friction, resulting in more power and better fuel economy.
The new XSR900 has Yamaha’s sophisticated Chip Controlled Throttle (YCC-T) as well as a YZF-R1-style Accelerator Position Sensor Grip (APSG). It is a comprehensive ride-by-wire system with a sensor in the twist grip that simulates different resistance levels for a genuine throttle feel. The final result is a snappy torque-rich powertrain with the exciting sensation of a direct link between its throttle grip and the rear tire. Yamaha’s selectable D-MODE also allows riders to change the engine character on the fly using four alternative power delivery options. The improved Assist and Slipper (A&S) clutch on the XSR900 reduces rear-wheel hop during aggressive deceleration. The clutch has been modified with new friction plate material to withstand the increased torque levels of the new 890cc CP3 motor.
Simultaneously, a changed cam angle lessens the stress on the clutch springs, resulting in a lighter feel at the lever. The cross-plane Triple’s unique soundscape is enhanced by updated intake and exhaust systems which also improve efficiency. The low-slung exhaust design also helps center mass and is substantially lighter than its predecessor. The six-speed transmission on the XSR900 takes full advantage of the inline triple’s low-to-mid-range torque and superb response while also improving the small three-cylinder architecture.
Chassis/Suspension
The new Yamaha 2022 XSR900 Sports Heritage Motorcycle offers a Controlled Filling (CF) die-cast technique to create the all-new compact, lightweight aluminum frame making complicated frame structures lighter and stronger than traditional casting methods. A newly engineered box-section aluminum swingarm extends the wheelbase by 55mm to improve straight-line stability. The new XSR900’s ergonomics have been revised for a more aggressive profile and a renewed focus on the rider.
The lowered head pipe position innovative subframe with lower seat height and longer swingarm improve straight-line performance while keeping the XSR900’s distinctive crisp handling, placing the rider more within the bike for increased control and confidence. Due to the altered head pipe position, the new suspension incorporates an improved fully adjustable 41mm KYB® inverted front fork with a shorter and lower profile. It’s teamed with a new adjustable KYB® rear shock that’s forward-inclined and almost invisible to enhance the new model’s clean, aggressive side profile even more.
The XSR900’s high-quality braking components include a new Brembo radial front master cylinder for the front brake to support more aggressive sporty riding. The master cylinder piston rotates in the same direction as the brake lever motion, resulting in a more linear supply of hydraulic pressure for improved feel and control. In addition, a new front brake lever improves adjustability and appearance. New sporty 10-spoke aluminum wheels with Yamaha’s proprietary spin forming technology improve appearance while drastically lowering unsprung weight. As a result, the suspension action is enhanced and the moment of inertia has reduced, resulting in a more responsive feel, especially during cornering and braking.
