There is a wide variety of alternatives available in almost every capacity bracket, resulting in manufacturers gradually blurring the lines that make up large to mid-sized naked.
But what if you’re looking for something more interesting or unique—perhaps even a sporty nude? Since you prefer a bare-bones motorcycle to a spine-tingling sports bike, why should you be denied the spine-tingling thrill of sports?
Top Ten Best Naked Motorcycles Up to 1000cc in 2023 – Top Rated
10 – Energica EsseEsse9+
Regular Bikes Catalog readers will no doubt be familiar with Energica. This Italian company spearheaded the exploding EV movement with models like the Xperia Sports Tourer and Ego Sportsbike, even if the electrics don’t rev your motor.
How about the Energica EsseEsse9+, the company’s more economical entry-level electric new retro(ish) roadster? You may have also seen his Street Fighter, Energica Eva.
Although based on Eva, Energica has since dropped the name from the EsseEsse9+ prefix to make it a standalone model. Although not strictly a performance model, the car will still drag out any of its rivals here electrically, hitting 60 mph in three or 2.8 seconds if you opt for the fastest version. It will speed up.
9 – BMW F 900 R
BMW certainly took its time adding some grunt to its Motorrad lineup for a firm that has built such a legendary reputation for its athletic prowess on four wheels.
But after enduring for so long with just the S 1000 RR, BMW is now expanding with its new ‘M’ series, which started with the M 1000 RR and now joins the M 1000 R naked. Although, at £19,480, it’s not quite worthy of inclusion here.
Instead, there’s only one trim level for the BMW F 900 R, which makes it fit both needs, regardless of whether you want a standard mid-to-large capacity bare BMW or a sporty one.
8 – Kawasaki Z900 SE Performance
Given Kawasaki’s extensive sports history, it’s a bit disappointing that its well-loved Z900 line doesn’t offer a hot-racing-inspired model aside from the reheated Kawasaki Z900 SE Performance version.
However, given that the Z900 already oozes athleticism in normal form and produces the same amount of power in all its variants, perhaps Kawasaki has successfully met that requirement on a basic level.
Regardless, the Z900 SE Performance receives track-derived modifications, including a larger-diameter fork for better adjustability, a clever Ohlins rear suspension, a heavier Akrapovic exhaust, and Brembo brakes.
7 – MV Agusta Brutale 800 RR
It’s a credit to MV Agusta that the Brutale Naked has only needed the occasional nip and tuck since 2011 to remain the most exotic and coveted offering in the segment despite not being in its prime.
Despite lacking the body impact of its 1000cc big brother of the three-pot 800 variant, the Brutale displays incredible attention to detail, such as its triple exhaust, prominent bison hump, and newly adopted flared nostrils, with narrow wings. Appears from Aero Gadgets.
6 – KTM 890 Duke R
The KTM 890 Duke R is the Austrian company’s most athletic mid-size model while we patiently await KTM’s return to the giant sportbike market with the all-new, in-development RC 990.
The KTM 890 Duke R, also known as the “Super Scalpel,” earns a reputation as the “bad boy” of the segment with its boldly bold Kiska design elements, with a bare-bones profile and Razor-sharp bodywork are included, which is not unattractive. Packs a punch.
5 – Yamaha XSR 900
While we wouldn’t normally include so-called “modern classic” or “retro” bikes in a countdown like this, we’re making an exception for the 2022 Yamaha XSR 900.
The XSR 900 is a model with what we (vaguely) describe as a “contemporary retro” aesthetic. For its latest redesign, Yamaha drew influence from its racing history in the 1980s to its legendary blue paint scheme and decals that pay homage to its original Delta box bikes.
4 – Aprilia Tuono 660 Factory
The Aprilia Tuono 660 Factory is a bit of a wild card as it concedes a large cylinder share and cubic capacity to its rivals here. Still, it plays a key role in the argument that less is often better.
The Tuono, like its RS 660 sports bike sibling, is a stunning new mid-twin 660cc Aprilia platform that punches above its weight amid plenty of competition in the area.
What the Tuono 660 lacks in raw power compared to its rivals, which tops out at 100bhp in the pinnacle factory version, it makes up for by fine-tuning each of these ponies to deliver pure riding pleasure.
3 – Ducati Monster SP
The Italian company’s answer to those who may be worried that the current generation of roti roadster has lost some of its venom is the recently launched Ducati Monster SP.
While the latest version of the Monster, introduced in 2021, has undoubtedly softened some of the angularity of its predecessors, the new flagship Monster SP represents an attempt to restore its sharpness.
They’re a welcome upgrade for a bike that, even in standard trim, is a tour de force on the road. They try to achieve this with fully adjustable suspension front and rear, powerful Brembo Stylema calipers, a steering damper, attractive Termignoni end caps, and a paint job inspired by Ducati’s title-winning MotoGP bikes.
2 – Yamaha MT-09 SP
The Yamaha MT-09, a stalwart in the mid-to-large naked market, has established itself as a consistent class favorite over the years thanks to its strengths in quality, comfort, usability, and value.
That being said, these aren’t particular features that will make people’s hearts race. The Yamaha MT-09 SP, its big brother, enters stage left.
The MT-09 SP is powered by Yamaha’s excellent 890cc triple-cylinder CP3 engine. While it produces the same amount of power (117 bhp), the Japanese company has wisely prioritized more linear mid-range torque.
1 – Triumph Street Triple 765 RS
While you might guess from one look at the new 2023 Triumph Street Triple 765 RS that the British company has taken an ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ stance with the current iteration, the devil is actually in the details.
Because the outgoing RS was fast, exciting to ride, and well-built, there wasn’t much wrong with it, which would explain why it had – at least on the surface – a winning formula. Why not tinker too much with it? Look closer, though, and you’ll see that while they appear smaller in photos, the design changes to metal are crisper and more powerful.
