Launched in 2002, Suzuki Burgman 650 crossed the last decade while becoming the limousine of the maxi-scooters. In answer on arrival of serious competitors, Suzuki pertinently accentuated its forces and gummed some of its weaknesses. Successful bet? Test.
A really maximum maximum-scooter!
With 277 kg all full facts for Suzuki Burgman 650 Executive (with heating saddle and handles and momentary splash plate of series) and 275 kg for the standard version (Genuine), the maxi-scooter GT of the blazon of Hamamatsu remains a “heavyweight” of the category. A judgment confirmed by its imposing aspect: 2265 mm length, it occupies only 430 mm less on one parking space that a Smart For two Cut, it “micro conveys” Daimler group!
Fortunately that excel it system of retractable rear view mirrors (of a pressure prolonged with the left control unit) is renewed: with the total width (810 mm) and the volume of its very effective retro, that facilitates the increase of files or the parking’s in the narrow places. Good news: this device from now on is installed of series on Suzuki Burgman 650 Genuine, just like ABS and the adjustable windshield electrically.
Even if its excellent balance and its centre of gravity placed very low contribute to make forget its roundness quickly, the fact that it did not lose a gram proves a little astonishing: according to Suzuki, the face lift granted to the part postpones (less broad 25 mm) would however have made it possible to reduce the loop via the suppression of reinforcements of the steel frame. In addition, the new power station ABS developed by Bosch would weigh “55% less”, ensure the Japanese engineers.
“Yes, but the weight gained on these points is unfortunately compensated on the level of the exhaust. We completely redrew it – outside as inside – so that he meets the anti-pollution standards most severe, and that results in additional weight”, answers us Etsuji Kato, the “Advisor Senior” of division engine in Suzuki Moto. In fact, the catalyst of this silencer covered with an elegant chrome mask 20 mm is longer.
While speaking about elegance, the face lift of which profits Suzuki Burgman 650 2013 gives him a blow of young welcome: before and the back gain in fluidity thanks to more tended lines. The redrawn headlights bring also a little modernity, that Suzuki could perhaps have pushed front to mark the scission with the model precedent.
On the technical plan, Suzuki Burgman 650 2013 renewed almost such as they are its main features: the twin-cylinder online of 638 DC develops exactly the same values of power and couple (55 ch and 62 Nm), but would appear more sober from “15% in automatic mode Drive” thanks to the use of more effective injectors and a lower diameter, springs of valves to more flexible tarring and new segments on its two pistons.
In the same way, the reduction of frictions on the level as of clutch disks (- 35% of frictions thanks to a new material of surface) and final transmission by pinions would take part to reduce consumption. Alas, this announced progress could not be checked, fault of being able to fill the tank during the test. As an indication, the average condos indicated to the instrument panel after 225 km traversed at good rhythm varied from 5.6 L with 6.5 l/km according to the testers.
Lastly, the transmission with continuous variation “CVT” also was the object of a handing-over on level primarily aiming at softening its operation in automatic mode.
Thanks to a fall of the driving mode at low speed and a new parameter setting of the injection, Suzuki sought to reduce – even to eliminate – the jolts felt on the model precedent, in particular during strong revivals or decelerations. And the efforts made by the motor mechanics are immediately perceptible: acceleration is more easily measurable and the phases of acceleration/deceleration are perfectly transparent.
With the cut of gases below 20 km/h, the free phenomenon of wheel felt when the aviator “takes down” shows also much less marked. With the approach of an intersection, new Suzuki Burgman 650 2013 fact proof of more than flexibility, because its management of the engine brake is much more finely controlled: true more on the level of the approval of control
A large complete and practical scooter
Stopped all carefully with a red light in front of Coliseum in Rome (Italy), the “mega -maxi-scooter” Suzuki reveals another aspect of its general progression: the notches dug in its floor were redrawn with the profit of accessibility.
Thus, in spite of a very broad saddle (but low: 755 mm on Genuine and 5 mm more on Executive because of heating system), the boots of a pilot of 1m75 come naturally and completely in contact with the bitumen.
And this, even while remaining well installed at the bottom of this very comfortable sited, the lumbar ones maintained well by the pilot splash plate. Whose equipment can vary from position 50 mm in the longitudinal axis, in order to benefit from vast space separating the saddle from the apron to extend its legs comfortably?
The top of the body also enjoys a princely reception: even with the bubble in low position, the bust is sheltered perfectly and does not undergo any constraint, while the well drawn branches of the handlebar are caught effortlessly. Only flat concerning the handlebar: its width and its distance with respect to the pilot require to have “the long arm” to accompany the external branch into obstinate at the time of a half-turn.
On the other hand, Suzuki Burgman 650 2013 offers an excellent turning radius and the width of its handlebar improves the arm of lever, supporting the operations at low and average speeds. The handles of adjustable brakes in spacing and two glove boxes of 1.3 liter easily accessible complete a well thought ergonomics.
In spite of their many orders (ten buttons on the left handle of the Executive one!), the control units remain functional but miss elegance. The recourse to multiple colors (blue, orange yelling, yellow bursting, black, clear and red gray!) swears visually. That does not play in Favor of perceived quality, not more than the side “plastic explosive” of certain plastics (glove box and hides handlebar, in particular) or cables it surrounded by outgoing adhesive tape of the basic ordering of the heating handles.
A glance on the new console of edge informs about… practically all! The dials of the needle meter and rev counter frame a digital screen where appear the hour, the level and the petrol consumption, the temperature of the engine and the air, total mileage, two daily trips and committed “speed” in manual mode. An indicator of alarm ignites even when the outside temperature goes down below 3°C!
For 2013, two new features make their appearance: a message of maintenance is registered in bottom digital window on the left every 6000 km to announce the need for draining oil, while a green symbol “Eco” ignites when adopted control makes it possible to spare consumption.
Readable but an austere bit, this instrumentation inspired of the car suffers only from one defect, rather aggravating on this kind of scooter “Premium”: impossibility of making ravel all this information since the handlebar. Nothing to arrange, the buttons reserved for this function on the instrument panel is small and not very accessible while rolling, because of their distance compared to the pilot.
In the chapter of the annoying practical details, let us quote also the absence of hinge on the tank filler cap of petrol of 15 liters or valve bent on the wheel before 15 inches. Damage, because the floating discs of brake (fixed before) of 260 mm do not leave much place to check or modify the pressure… In the back, the wheel of 14 inches profits as for it from this attention.
Perhaps lastly, if volume (5.2 liters) and the plasticity of the glove compartment bootable and equipped with a catch 12V are renewed, the reduction in the throw weight of the trunk under the saddle will grain some of them. Because of the refining of the back, the volume of the compartment of Suzuki Burgman 650 2013 passes indeed from 56 to 50 liters. Or when the form takes the step on the function…
No concern however, MNC checked: it is always possible to slip two crash helmets or flexible into this lit space, whose opening is ordered with the contactor. And it still remains of the place to place gloves or a rainwear, which is enough amply with the daily newspaper.
With use, the owners of new Burgman will also appreciate the appearance of a small inspection door allowing checking the levels of oil and cooling on the side before left. A creditable initiative, knowing that these checks passed before by a disassembling of part of the floor!
Travel in class business!
Remarkably nimble taking into consideration its gauge, Suzuki Burgman 650 profits from an excellent directional precision which authorizes sharp and precise placements to him. Downtown, in spite of its weight, the Suzuki maxi-scooter moves almost end of the fingers with a disconcerting ease.
Its powerful engine makes it possible to form part of circulation and to start with fire without fearing “to miss some”, while its suspensions effectively absorb the small ones and large deformations sometimes met in urban area. This table shining is however spoiled by an ABS well too significant which lengthens the braking distances copiously.
On the paving stones of large the axes of Rome, the back brake proved practically unusable during supported breakings, so much the anti-locking one loses the wire quickly. With front, the device is shown fortunately more effective, in the absence of being completely succeeded. During strong decelerations, one regrets the absence of a coupled braking which would make it possible to benefit from a power in addition very satisfactory with before like in the back.
Downtown, useless to play with the various functions of the CVT: the mode “Drive” (engaged by default) is most suitable. The manual mode with its 5 “speeds” does not bring significant profit and generates even some jolts on the way reports.
Much more reactive than the mode “Drive”, the automatic function “Power” is shown on its side too sporting in urban cycle. The instantaneous answer – almost brutal – accelerator makes control less comfortable, while the marked engine brake requires more attention.
At high-speed, it is the protection offered by the bubble which acknowledges the first its limits: it misses only a few small centimeters to save the entirety of the head, while a light depression is made in the back feel helmet starting from 140 km/h. The development out of blower of a new support of windshield thus does not eradicate completely this phenomenon which remains nevertheless bearable.
Admittedly less sharp than Tmax 530 in the phase shifts, Suzuki Burgman 650 2013 is placed easily in curve where new ratings of suspensions make wonder: rare are the scooters to be able to praise itself to offer a compromise of damping also successful between comfort and performances. Excellent motility never makes regret the absence of anti-skid and even encourages giving a layer of it on the angle.
Although reduced by 5 mm (by 130 to 125 mm), the ground clearance is worthy of astonishing and amusing dynamic capacities of Suzuki Burgman 650 2013.
And if the central crutch ends well up rubbing each side, that does not generate an immediate sanction, standard rising of the aft wheel as that arrives on certain scooters!
The excellent one with already very good!
To be played of the congestions or to take the key of the fields: Suzuki Burgman 650 year 2013 can do everything. And well, in bonus! Its large reserve of couple and its multiple practical aspects open all the prospects to him, including a long voyage in duet.
Even if this year 2013 is more to regard as an evolution that like a very new model, Suzuki perfectly negotiated this delicate challenge consisting in improving a succeeded and appreciated product (more than 83,000 sales in the world since 2002).
Some will undoubtedly regret the timid restyling or the absence of equipment “up to date” like orders with the handlebar, automatic handbrake, even a reverse running to facilitate the operations of this (heavy) beast.
