Based on the well-received Suzuki DR-Z400S, Suzuki presents the new Suzuki 2023 DR-Z400SM Dual Purpose Motorcycle. As such, it packs Supermotard features and style into a lightweight, street-legal, and compact package. This bike adds joy to paved roads and off-road spirit. It’s common to take a supermoto through commuter traffic, around a sharp bend in a canyon, or down winding forest roads.
Its 4-stroke, 398cc liquid-cooled engine delivers sharp throttle response and excellent low-rpm torque for any of these situations. The main changes between the DR-Z400SM and DR-Z400S are the wider spoke wheels, 300mm diameter floating front brake rotor, and inverted front fork. More giant rims with big brakes and high-grip tires make for an exciting sportbike ride, and the inverted fork helps in reducing unsprung weight and improve overall handling.
Suzuki 2023 DR-Z400SM Dual Purpose Motorcycle – Features and Specs
Key Features
The new Suzuki 2023 DR-Z400SM Dual Purpose Motorcycle perfectly combines the features and style of a Supermotard in a lightweight, street-legal, compact package. It builds on the well-proven DR-Z400S. With a push-button start, the 398cc DOHC liquid-cooled dry sump engine is solid and versatile.
The Supermoto features high-grip sports bike tires on strong spoke wheels, anodized aluminum axle rims, and fully adjustable MX-style suspension. The Suzuki 2023 DR-Z400SM Dual Purpose Motorcycle’s geometric graphics are complemented by the solid Special White No. 2 bodywork, which has returned, or the new Grand Blue and solid black bodywork.
Engine Features
A powerful and manageable 398cc DOHC liquid-cooled dry sump engine powers the new Suzuki 2023 DR-Z400SM Dual-Purpose Motorcycle. It features a lightweight, compact cylinder head with four valves, a 28-degree taper angle, 29mm exhaust, and 36mm intake valves, and a shim-under-bucket valve adjustment system like in Suzuki 2022 DR-Z400SM.
A lightweight starter motor including an automatic mechanical decompression system powers basic electric starting. A cylinder coated with nickel, silicon, and phosphorus (SCEM) is more robust, lighter, and has higher heat conduction properties than an iron liner.
Oil jets in the forged aluminum piston crankcase provide an additional oil cooling system, which is 10% lighter than cast pistons. The Mikuni 36mm carburetor, fed by a six-liter airbox, features a deceleration enhancer circuit to aid in smooth throttle response during engine braking or acceleration.
Quick-release fasteners on the left side of the body cover provide easy access to the air filter. The motorcycle can meet emissions compliance by using a PAIR (air supply) system for the exhaust without compromising performance. The left radiator’s thermostatically regulated cooling fan helps maintain a constant operating temperature during traffic. The bike’s lightness is partly attributed to the magnesium alloy magneto, cylinder head cover, and clutch.
Transmission Features
The new Suzuki 2023 DR-Z400SM Dual Purpose Motorcycle features a compact, five-speed transmission with a cable-actuated clutch and a separate magnesium outer shell to simplify clutch maintenance. A sealed O-ring drive chain with low maintenance and long life makes little noise when riding.
Chassis Features
The sporty radial tires are mounted on wide, blue, or black anodized RK axle aluminum rims with stainless steel spokes 120/70-R17 front and 140/70-R17 rear. A front disc brake with a massive 300 mm floating-type rotor and dual-piston caliper and a 240 mm rear disc brake including a single-piston caliper provide strong stopping power. Based on the RM250, the long-travel Showa Ulta front fork features a unique coating on the inner tube surfaces for smooth movement and adjustable compression/rebound damping.
A fully adjustable rear shock absorber with an RM-inspired tapered aluminum swingarm and high/low-speed compression damping adjuster is combined to control the rear wheel precisely. Renthal Tapered Aluminum Handlebars have an excellent turn for an aggressive ride and look. They also reduce vibration. The sporty radial tires are mounted on wide, blue, or black anodized RK axle aluminum rims with stainless steel spokes 120/70-R17 front and 140/70-R17 rear.
Electrical Features
A small, digital instrument cluster includes a speedometer, odometer, dual trip meters with increment and decrement capabilities, a clock, and a stopwatch. Bright 60/55 watt halogen headlights, small tail/stop lights, lightweight turn signals with rubber mounts, and horns are all considered on-road legal lighting. Powering the electrical system, like the simple push-button starter, is a small, maintenance-free battery with 6.5 amps.
Additional Features
The new Suzuki 2023 DR-Z400SM Dual Purpose Motorcycle is available at 12 months limited coverage: the extended warranty period and additional benefits Suzuki Extended Protection (SEP) offers.
