However, the Zero’s closest rivals, the Honda CBR650R and Kawasaki Ninja 650, are fully £16,000 less expensive than the Zero; you’d have to be an environmentalist to justify such a huge price difference.

It’s also a huge success, as it kept prices affordable, added a four-cylinder engine, and combined Honda’s engineering prowess with just the requisite Fireblade bliss.

When demand for the four-cylinder 600cc model died out, Kawasaki was among several manufacturers that almost completely scrapped their middleweight sports offerings, essentially leaving only the Ninja 650. The recently launched, reasonably priced ZX-4R series includes RR and SE versions.

It’s not a complete throwback to the era of the 400cc four-cylinder monster class, but it still packs 79 horsepower and offers the feature everyone misses most from vintage middleweight super sports machines: sound. Track.

The ZX-4R may not be the fastest or the most torquey, but at £8,699, at least from the dealer, it’s hard to argue against its affordability, and you can be sure you’ll get a ride in it. It will be a lot of fun.

The Ninja 650, which thrives on high speed, combines this with a balanced chassis that isn’t as refined as the ZX-6R yet makes for a pleasant ride on twisty terrain.

Triumph Daytona 660

After much speculation, the Triumph Daytona 660 was unveiled in early 2024. The new Daytona has a powerful underpinning thanks to its 660cc three-cylinder engine, which it shares with the Trident 660.

The Aprilia RS 660 has a potential to be extremely important for several reasons. It does not directly compete with the ZX-6R/R6 downsized superbike for the street model, but with 100 horsepower and at 169 kg, it is more potent than the 650 Ninja/CBR650R, but at a higher price.

The result is a model that deserves a niche in the market and may inspire other manufacturers to move things in the direction of its lightweight, responsive, usable power and excellent handling models. However, Aprilia raises the bar a bit higher by packing in a ton of innovative technology to rival its RSV4 big brother.
