Purchased as a package of parts in the 1990s, the Brough Superior SS80 is said to have taken 20 years to build. But now that it’s going up for auction, it may fetch a ridiculous sum of money!
Between 1922 and 1940, only over 1,000 copies of the renowned V-twin motorcycle, known as the Brough Superior SS80 models, were produced. But the marque’s association with T.E. Lawrence, as Lawrence of Arabia, made it stand out. Eight fabled machines are said to have belonged to Lawrence, and one was reportedly still being constructed for him at his death in 1935.
Just a few months after leaving the military, Lawrence was riding a Brough on the roads of Dorset when he passed away. Despite his passing, the Brough brand remained intact, and the bikes are now regarded with the same respect as the Vincent Black Shadows, another legendary British motorcycle.
In light of this, it should come as no surprise that a mint condition example of one of these vintage computers, whose seller is letting it go owing to poor health, is expected to fetch between £65,000 and £70,000 at auction on October 26. Like these devices, scarcity often drives the final hammer price substantially higher than the estimate; if two interested parties are present on the day and a bidding war ensues, the possibilities are endless. Charterhouse Auctioneers and Valuers are auctioning this one, and the Haynes International Motor Museum will be the sale site.
George Beale, the auctioneer for Charterhouse, commented on the sale, saying, “This SS80 will be a great addition to any collection. All motorcycle collectors hold Briggs Superiors in the highest regard.”
The motorcycle is part of an auction with over 100 bikes, accessories, memorabilia, and more. The official website has further details; viewing is scheduled for October 26.
