Showa’s 41mm Separate Function is added to 2021 Honda CB650R ABS Sports Bike. Big Piston forks and a four-cylinder engine with a high rpm limiter are also included. More forward-set handlebars, an upgraded LCD dash, and a USB Type-C plug beneath the seat are other upgrades. New side panels accentuate the simple style.
Honda has always benefited from pushing the envelope in both engineering and design. The CB1000R, CB300R, and CB125R introduced a new identity to the line-up of naked motorcycles in 2018, fusing cafe racer design cues with an ultra-modern, forward-looking aesthetic under the “Neo Sports Cafe” design motif.
The very competitive naked middleweight market was the last area where the new look could be seen, and in 2019, the CB650R comfortably assumed this position. It has been a massive hit because it was designed for a youthful audience that wants to flaunt their flair while getting the most out of thrilling four-cylinder engine performance and light, adaptable, sophisticated chassis handling.
Building on the momentum, the CB650R will get a significant front suspension change in 2021, along with several other refinements to increase comfort, use, and practicality.
2021 Honda CB650R ABS Sports Bike – Features and Specs
Chassis
The steel diamond frame of the CB650R uses twin elliptical spars, pressed swing arm pivot plates, and a rigidity balance that has been specifically tuned to deliver balanced handling characteristics with high levels of rider feedback. With a trail of 101mm and a wheelbase of 1,450mm, the rake is set at 25.5°. 202.5 kg is the curb weight.
The 41mm USD Separate Function Big Piston (SFF-BP) forks from Showa are a significant improvement. High damping performance and less weight are provided by a pressure separation damper located in one fork tube and a spring mechanism located in the other. Increased feel, bump absorption, and control result from a more oversized diameter piston. The single-tube mono shock, which has a 7-stage spring preload adjustment, functions directly on the curved gravity die-cast aluminum swing arm.
A single-piston rear caliper and 240mm disc are combined with four-piston radial-mount front brake calipers that operate on 310mm wave-pattern floating discs. A two-channel system, the ABS.
Front and rear tires measuring 120/70-ZR17 and 180/55-ZR17 are mounted on cast aluminum wheels.
Styling & Equipment
The CB650R’s Neo Sports Cafe styling is tightly coiled and aggressive, with the distinctive tiny ‘Trapezoid’ proportion of a short, stubby tail and short overhang headlamp. One of the main design elements of the family is the large gasoline tank. Its sleek lines highlight the hardness of accurate metal surfaces and cap the engineering of the four-cylinder engine. The ignition is also housed there.
The rear mudguard, which is now made of steel rather than nylon plastic, and the new, thinner side panels emphasize the minimalist design. A USB Type-C port has been added beneath the seat for simple mobile device charging. The seat height is still 810mm.
One of the defining elements of the Neo Sports Cafe design language is the circular headlamp. Like the rest of the illumination, it is LED. Sharp LCD instruments have a Shift Up, Gear Position, and Peak Hold indication and are based on the CB1000R. With a change in LED angle and font size for 2021, readability has been enhanced.
The handlebar angle has increased by 3° to 35°, which is another minor adjustment. This modification facilitates U-maneuvers and tight, slow-speed turns.
Engine
The DOHC, 16-valve, 649cc engine is developed to provide the cleanest, most pleasant mid-sized four-cylinder performance imaginable, with the renownedly quick ‘pick-up’ across the rev range hard-hitting, the high-revving top end of Honda’s in-line fours. Peak torque of 63Nm is supplied at 8,500 rpm, while peak power of 70kW comes at 12,000 rpm. A2 license holders have access to a simple 35kW conversion.
The only modifications to engine specifications until the 2021 update are those necessary for EURO5 compliance, which called for adjustments to the ECU, cam lobes, intake timing, exhaust pipe, catalyzes, silencer, and crank pulsar.
Compact cylinder heads are produced by direct cam actuation; the diameter and stroke are set at 67mm x 46mm and the compression ratio is increased to 11.6:1. Twin air ducts, one on each side of the gasoline tank, feed the air box and provide a throaty intake roar. Iridium spark plugs are used.
Asymmetric piston skirts decrease friction by minimizing bore contact. With enhanced heat transmission, ferrous spines on the outside of the cylinder sleeves reduce oil consumption (and conflict), and the pins of the quiet SV cam chain have a vanadium coating to lessen frictional losses. Most of the outside hoses are eliminated by internal water channeling from the cylinder head to the cylinders.
The engine has a small internal structure, a stacked six-speed transmission, and a starting design with the cylinders canted forward by 30 degrees. An assist/slipper clutch manages rear-wheel lockup under heavy braking and quick downshifts while easing shifts. Rear wheel traction is controlled by Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC), which may be disabled at the rider’s discretion.
With a fuel consumption rate of 20.4km/l (WMTC mode), the 15.4L fuel tank can go more than 300km.
