Engine
The new Yamaha MT-09 SP 2022 Hyper Naked Motorcycle is equipped with a downdraft intake and a newly built 890cc liquid-cooled three-cylinder, DOHC, four-valve-per-cylinder fuel-injected (YCC-T) engine. It has a bore stroke of 78 mm, 62.1 mm, and a compression ratio of 11.5:1. This engine produces a lot of torque with a lot of power. Almost every major engine component has been rebuilt to be lighter, from the pistons and connecting rods through the crankshaft, camshafts, and crankcase.
The combination of higher combustion efficiency and reduced weight resulted in fuel efficiency of 49 miles per gallon. The previous MT-09’s gasoline distribution system has been rebuilt. The fuel injectors on the MT-09 SP were previously mounted directly to the cylinder head, but they are now attached to the throttle valve side of the throttle body on the MT-09 SP. The injectors now spray at the backside of the intake valve heads to increase fuel atomization and reduce fuel particle adherence to the port walls resulting in excellent combustion efficiency. The throttle valve is controlled by the Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle (YCC-T) electronic technology extensively tested on YZF and MT-09 models.
The forged pistons are light and provide for smooth, high-revving power. The motorcycle offers an unsurpassed level of manufacturing accuracy. The forged connecting rods are created utilizing the fracture-split process in which the big-end ring of the connecting rod is purposely shattered and then reunited. When the rods are fastened together again around the crankshaft, the result is a pair of entirely matching halves that generate a far more precise mating surface. The three-cylinder bores of the CP3 engine are mounted forward towards the exhaust side.
The direct-plated ceramic-composite cylinder bores offer excellent heat dissipation and reduced friction. At the same time, the offset reduces piston to cylinder wall friction resulting in more power and better fuel economy. At low speeds, the MT-09 SP’s muffler helps to reduce overall weight and mass centralization and produces a low-frequency exhaust note. The exhaust tailpipes are symmetrical from left to right, directing sound pressure to both sides of the machine and creating an exhaust note that gives the rider a sense of torque.
The new Yamaha MT-09 SP 2022 Hyper Naked Motorcycle is suitable for an excellent pulse effect. The new stainless steel header pipes are each given various curvatures and lengths. When the rider closes and opens the throttle, the intake system is tailored to the new engine and delivers a linear response. The three intake ducts also give excellent midrange and high-rpm engine sound. The intake sounds produced by these ducts are designed with different cross-sections and lengths to resonate harmoniously at different wavelength ranges. Simultaneously, the sound pressure has been adjusted to create a pleasing sound in the mid-and high-rpm range.
As a result, an air cleaner box with good intake efficiency and a beautiful sound that improves the sensation of acceleration has been created. The Assist and Slipper (A&S) clutch on the MT-09 SP has been designed to work optimally with the new engine resulting in a lighter clutch lever pull and smoother chassis behavior during downshifts. The transmission ratios have been tweaked, with first and second gear ratios slightly higher than prior MT-09s. The transmission gives the ideal blend of tremendous torque feeling and comfort of usage from accelerating to stopping, thanks to the enhanced momentum of inertia of the crankshaft and the fuel injection settings.
Chassis/Suspension
The new Yamaha MT-09 SP 2022 Hyper Naked Motorcycle provides the lightweight aluminum frame of the MT-09 SP exemplifies the MT’s distinctive “agility.” The balance of longitudinal, torsional, and lateral rigidity has been increased to ensure straight-line stability and handling performance. Most importantly, the lateral stiffness has been enhanced by almost 50% for improved straight-line stability. Yamaha’s latest controlled filling (CF) die casting process is used to create the all-new frame, contributing to the MT-09 SP’s reduced weight. The MT-09 SP features a weight-saving controlled filling aluminum die-cast subframe contributing to the model’s exceptional agility.
The new MT-09 SP swingarm uses a welded box shape of aluminum plate to produce excellent stiffness while still 250g lighter than previous MT-09 versions. The swingarm pivot component on the MT-09 SP attaches to the frame from the outside. This design highlights the MT-09 SP’s sleek feel while giving superb straight-line stability at high speeds and increased tuning strength, thanks to modifications to the chassis’ rigidity and extensive engineering of the forms of sections and components around the seat.
Lightweight wheels are used on the Yamaha MT-09 SP 2022 Hyper Naked Motorcycle. These wheels, made using Yamaha’s patented spin forging technique contribute to excellent handling. These wheels contribute significantly to the MT-09 SP’s nimble handling nature, with an 11 percent drop in inertia momentum in the rear. The MT-09’s state-of-the-art brake has a radial Nissin master cylinder for the front brake to support more spirited and sporty riding. The master cylinder piston rotates in the same direction as the brake lever motion resulting in a more linear delivery of hydraulic pressure and improved controllability. The Yamaha MT-09 SP is only the second Yamaha model to include this technology which can be controlled with just a fingertip after the YZF-R1.
The riding position was created with riders of all shapes and sizes in mind. Riders may adjust the handlebars and footpegs to two different settings that allow them to choose a comfortable position the instant they get on the bike. The footpeg mounts may be lifted 14mm higher and 4mm rearward, and the handlebar clamps can be adjusted 10mm front. The KYB® front suspension on the MT-09 SP may be separately adjusted for compression and rebound damping on either side. Adjustments for high and low-speed compression damping are also available to provide riders with a broader range of options. The DLC coating on the 41mm inner tubes provides exceptional sliding properties while also contributing to the exterior’s superb appearance. The rear shock on the MT-09 SP is a premium Ohlins® shock absorber with a remote preload adjuster and rounding off this class-leading suspension setup.
