For off-road excursions, Kawasaki offers full-size recreational trail bikes, the KLX230R and KLX230R S. They all have the same long-travel suspension with an engine and frame designed with plenty of ground clearance to improve off-road capability—trails in mind. The KLX230R S’s upgraded suspension lowers the total seat height by an inch from the KLX230R, which is the only difference.
It is just one more way that Kawasaki contributes to ensuring that the KLX range of motorcycles includes an affordable, strong, and capable model so that everyone in the family can get out and experience off-road experiences.
Increase the bar to find the trail. These lightweight, full-size recreational trail bikes, the KLX230R, feature long-travel suspension and ample ground clearance, making them ideal for enjoying dirt rides.

Engine
A long-stroke engine’s ample low- to mid-range torque allows for powerful pulling at small throttle openings and easy low-speed control. Simple air-cooled SOHC architecture simplifies maintenance.
Digital Fuel Injection (DFI) (KP) on the trail helps deliver a precise and smooth throttle response for better engine control. In addition to a constant fuel supply, fuel injection also helps reduce emissions by automatically correcting for altitude and air temperature variations. When paired with an electric starter button, DFI provides reliable starting regardless of engine temperature, making starting the engine easy.
A tuned exhaust enhances the engine’s easy-to-use performance, and a tapered muffler with an oval cross-section contributes to a powerful off-road appearance. A tuned exhaust improves the engine’s easy-to-use performance, and a tapered muffler with an elliptical cross-section contributes to a powerful off-road appearance.
The engine’s low mid-range power concentration is complemented by a smooth-shifting six-speed transmission and short final gearing, which makes it easy to navigate tight terrain. The high-tensile steel frame was designed to improve trail performance and increase rider confidence. The engine and frame were built together.
The engine height was lowered to achieve the perfect balance of stiffness and precise center of gravity. The frame was also designed to grip the rider’s legs easily for better feedback and control. As well as helping to promote mobility, the relatively flat seat design and flush seams between the shrouds, seat, and side covers also aid in rider control.
A short wheelbase makes it easy to navigate the trail, and a finely tuned suspension system provides enough ground clearance for better trail riding performance. To increase riding confidence by enabling more riders to reach the ground comfortably, the KLX230R S’s suspension has been gently adjusted to lower the seat height by an inch. The new Uni-Trak(KP) rear suspension system absorbs big bumps more firmly while offering a smooth ride over smaller ones.
Riders can help adjust the bike to their weight by changing the preload of the gas-pressurized single rear shock. Petal disc brakes offer reliable stopping power. Trail riding performance is enhanced with 18-inch rear and 21-inch front aluminum wheels—an agile, aggressive image inspired by the styling of the Kawasaki KX. A large, bright headlight with a 55/60W halogen element provides good illumination.
