Honda’s brand-new XL750 Transalp continues the journey begun by the legendary original, and it’s primed and ready for a new generation of riders to go wherever the road may take them. Throttle By Wire (TBW) provides four preconfigured riding modes in addition to a User-selectable way, five levels of Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC) with integrated Wheelie Control, and three degrees of Engine Braking and Power from its eight-valve, parallel twin-cylinder powerplant. Full suspension is provided by Showa, with 43mm SFF-CATM USD forks up front and a rear shock connected through Pro-Link. Braking power is provided by dual, two-piston calipers at the show, and tubed tires wrap around 21/18-inch wheels. Engine

To power their street-fighting CB750 Hornet and their off-roading 2023 Honda XL750 Transalp Adventure Motorcycle, Honda’s development experts started with a blank sheet of paper and built a new twin-cylinder engine.

The resultant 755c 8-valve Unicam motor has a compression ratio of 11.0:1, with a diameter and stroke of 87 x 63.5mm. Its top-end power is substantial, with 67.5kW at 9,500rpm. In addition, there is a ton of useable torque available from low to mid-range rpm, with a peak of 75Nm at 7,250 rpm. The result is an engine that is practical and fun for rides of any length and variety, regardless of rider experience.

The 35.5mm intake valves (with 9.3mm lift) and the 29mm exhaust valves (with 8.2mm lift) are both operated by cam in the new engine, making it both compact and lightweight. The Unicam head is also utilized in the MX competition-ready CRF450R.

The main drive gear does double duty by also spinning the balancing shaft, the water pump is hidden behind the left-hand engine cover, and a water-cooled oil cooler is unnecessary, contributing to the engine’s small size.

Using revolutionary Vortex flow ducts, the air is distributed more evenly from the side scoops into the airbox, fed to downdraft intakes and throttle bodies with a 46mm diameter, resulting in lightning-fast acceleration and responsive throttle. As with the CRF450R and CBR1000RR-R Fire blades, the cylinders are coated with Ni-SiC (Nickel-Silicon Carbide) to improve the engine’s performance.

The crank achieves the distinctive twin-cylinder pulse impression’s 270° firing sequence. The exhaust sound has been fine-tuned to be rhythmically appealing and loud and angry.

Despite being technically similar, the Transalp’s engine TBW parameters are adjusted slightly to concentrate on an engine ‘flavor’ consistent with the long-distance touring work for which the Transalp will be the appropriate machine.

The assist/slipper clutch’s F.C.C Leaning Segment (FLS) discs reduce clutch drag torque by 30%, allowing for smoother upshifts and less strain on the lever. It controls rear-wheel hop during emergency stops and gear shifts.

With a 16.9-liter fuel tank and 23.km/l fuel consumption (in WMTC mode), the car can go 390 kilometers. And like the Hornet, a straightforward ECU remap at a Honda dealer will make a 35kW, A2 license option accessible.

Engine Electronics

Throttle By Wire (TBW) engine control allows the rider to easily switch between four different riding modes—SPORT, STANDARD, RAIN, and GRAVEL—that tailor the engine’s performance delivery and feel to the current environment and the rider’s intentions. The rider may also adjust the parameters to their liking in the USER mode.

There are four Engine Power (EP) settings, three Engine Brake (EB) settings, two Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) settings, five Honda selective torque Control (HSTC) settings, and the ability to disable HSTC and the rear ABS. The many riding modes provide unique permutations of all these factors. In addition to HSTC, Wheelie Control is standard on all vehicles.

Strong acceleration is achieved with little involvement in SPORT mode thanks to level 4 EP, level 2 ABS, and level 1 EB and HSTC.

STANDARD mode is a compromise option for city driving, with EP and HSTC at level 3 and EB and ABS at level 2.

RAIN mode is optimized for extreme road conditions; therefore, it uses the least aggressive EP level possible (level 1), the second-lowest EB and ABS levels (levels 2 and 5), and the highest HSTC setting (level 6).

For secure off-road riding on more challenging terrain, GRAVEL mode provides levels 2 EP, 3 EB, and 4 HSTC with a level 1 ABS setting.

USER mode, the rider may make and store their combination of EP1-4, HSTC1-5, EB1-3, and rear ABS off.

Chassis

At only 18.3kg, the steel diamond mainframe is lightweight compared to the CB500X’s frame. After extensive R&D, the primary and down tubes were thinned and the upper shock mount and swingarm pivot shape were optimized, resulting in a massively robust platform with the right amount of rigidity to give the rider a feel in any weather and the right amount of geometry to inspire confident handling agility. High-tension steel piping is used to strengthen and toughen the integrated heavy-duty subframe.

The curb weight is 208kg, the wheelbase is 1560mm, and the rake and trail are 27 degrees and 111mm, respectively. With a minimum turning radius of about 2.6 meters and a steering angle of only 42 degrees, U-turns at low speeds are a breeze.

Extended travel and exceptional bump absorption provide supple performance and comfort on-road and comforting control off-road; both were prioritized when selecting the suspension’s parameters with the all-around concept in mind. Showa’s 43mm SFF-CATM (Separate Function Fork-Cartridge) USD forks have 200mm of travel with adjustable spring preload. They are mounted through a forged aluminum bottom yoke and cast aluminum top yoke, respectively, offering an ideal blend of strength and stiffness across various riding conditions.

The swingarm is made from the same aluminum as the CRF1100L Africa Twin’s, but its swingarm has a remote reservoir Showa shock (with adjustable preload) that functions via Pro-Link—210 mm of clearance from the ground.

Compact calipers with two pistons operate the twin 310mm ‘wave’ discs. A single-piston caliper controls the 256mm ‘wave’ disc in the vehicle’s rear. Metzeler Karoo Street or Dunlop Mixtour 90/90-21 and 150/70-18 tubed tires are recommended for the front and back (21-inch) stainless steel spoked wheels, respectively.
