Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The CRF-F’s engine has undergone extensive revision for 2019. The end product was a larger-displacement, counterbalanced, EFI-equipped, modern-day unit that eliminated the need for rejecting and carburetor maintenance.
This 250cc four-stroke engine is easy for newcomers to handle because of its low-end solid and linear power delivery. Its capacity to lift the front end over obstacles, though, makes it thrilling enough for expert riders. The air-cooled single produces 20.1 horsepower and 15.5 pound-feet of torque and revs steadily to higher speeds on our dyno.
The CRF250F runs cleanly and is safe to ride in all 50 states since it complies with CARB and EPA standards and has a spark arrestor that meets USDA requirements.
Handling
The chassis of the CRF250F is small and stable. The machine’s small wheelbase (55.9 inches) makes it easy for novices to control. Flex, strength, feedback, and comfort are all well-balanced in the twin-spar steel frame.
A 41mm Showa fork and a shock from the same brand are also noteworthy. This fork can handle jumps, rocks, and tricky sections with ease because of its plush comfort and excellent bottoming resistance under high loads. According to Dirt Rider, little rain ruts may be annoying since the front suspension is so severe that it transfers vibration to the steering wheel. The shock was effective right out of the box, and despite having just preload adjustment, it was able to meet the needs of DR’s test rider, who weighed 120 pounds.
The CRF250F has effective brakes thanks to its front two-piston caliper/240mm disc and rear single-piston caliper/220mm disc. The CRF250F’s braking system is another example of its deft balancing act, providing sufficient stopping force without the kind of harsh first bite that may scare off inexperienced riders.
The fuel economy and highway MPG have not been measured.
Ergonomics: Comfort and Utility
The traditional dirt bike comfort is met by the long motocross-style seat, which allows the rider to go about with ease. The Honda’s estimated seat height of 34.7 inches is higher than its rivals, yet it is still easily doable. Our test riders’ heights ranged from 5’2″ to 5’8, yet they could quickly put both feet on the ground when stopped on Big Red’s trail bike.
Electronics
Few gadgets are needed for a gallop along the single track. An electric starter kicks the bike into gear, and electronic fuel injection keeps everything running smoothly and efficiently. Indicator lights for low gasoline and “key on” are installed on the handlebars to provide the rider with the most pertinent data.
