With the Pan America 1250, Harley-Davidson’s rugged adventure model, the company set new standards. Because of its adventure-bike design, off-road prowess, and liquid-cooled Revolution Max 1250 engine, this motorcycle deviates significantly from The MoCo’s usual.
It is a dual-surface vehicle with tires that function equally well on roads, trails, and soft conditions like gravel and sand. Although the suspension is adjustable, the true jewel is the electronics package, which draws top-shelf components to put this bike on par with some of the most significant ADV motorcycles in the world.
For the 2021 model year, the Pan America line first became available. With an entirely new frame and transmission, as well as the most excellent electronics H-D has to offer from the top of the line, it marked a significant change from the company’s standard operating procedure in Milwaukee.
2023 Harley-Davidson Pan-America Adventure Touring Bike – Features
Performance and Capability
The Revolution Max 1250 provides power for the Pan America 1250. Except for the apparent exception in the new Sportster series, which employs the same engine as the Pan America, the V-Twin’s similarities to Harley-Davidson’s other engines stop there. The two jugs are offset laterally, indicating side-by-side con-rod large ends as opposed to the traditional two-into-one configuration Harley-Davidson employed in most engines for a long time.
The engine has an over-square configuration thanks to a 105 mm bore and 72.2 mm stroke, which is another deviation for a business that often builds long-stroke/under-square engines for the torque they produce. 150 horsepower and 94 pound-feet of torque are produced by the 2023 Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250. Both of them turn on at 9,000 and 6,750 revolutions per minute.
Four-valve heads are timed by chain-driven, twin overhead cams using self-adjusting hydraulic lifters, which do not need valve adjustments. Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection is used to precisely measure the dino juice entering the intake tract, which is state-of-the-art and has tuned-velocity downdraft stacks.
A slipper-type clutch reduces the weight of the clutch-lever pull to give your left hand a respite while providing additional safety for the rear contact patch. The highest speed of the Pan America 1250 is 141 mph (227 km/h).
The H-D Road Safety Enhancements improve cornering performance to increase stability. A Hill Hold Control function holds the brakes so that you may deploy both training wheels to the ground for peace during takeoff on a gradient—Linked-Brake ABS, Traction Control, Drag Torque Slip Control, together with Wheel Lift reduction.
Design
The entire design is a radical departure from the usual more than anything else. It is considerably more than just a Sportster with knobby tires; in fact, most of the design follows the standard ADV bike template. A bike requires a bash plate, street knobbies, stock handguards, ideally heated grips, and laced wheels to be off-road focused. Although a few things are lacking, an adventure bike may be used with only off-road ability.
Vertical spoilers on the slimmed-down front fender shield the inverted forks’ inner tube from debris and rock impacts. The front blinkers, which are situated at the top of the radiator shrouds and are far out of harm’s way in case of a drop or terrain/brush impact, are mounted on a blunt but broad front fairing to divide the night.
For the rider’s comfort, a vented windshield at the top effectively cuts down on the annoying head-buffet effect at the top of the pocket. All of the instrumentation is controlled by a 6.8-inch TFT screen, which also serves as the rider interface for the ride-control electrical systems.
For a small amount of open-air baggage space, the saddle is joined by a relatively soft pillion cushion and sturdy J.C. grips that may serve as bungee net anchor points. To finish the project, all rear illumination is LED, and the little mudguard installs everything except the subframe-mount taillight.
Chassis
With high-tensile, low-alloy steel components for its Trellis-type frame and a forged aluminum mid-structure to complete the skeleton, Chassis H-D constructed the specifically made bones from the ground up. Swingarms are cast aluminum and have gull-wing shapes for strength and the ideal degree of stiffness.
With 47 mm, inverted front forks, and a piggyback mono shock out back, the suspension is top-notch. It has the complete trinity of ride quality control adjustments that are unusual for Harley-Davidson goods in general. Although the absence of laced wheels surprises me a bit, the cast hubs roll in a 19-inch diameter in front of a 17-inch wheel painted black and are equipped with Michelin® Scorcher® “Adventure” hoops that are effective on both trails and paved roads despite their lack of an aggressive stealth-knobby profile.
Front brake discs measuring 320 mm are bit by two four-bore calipers, while the rear brakes are handled by a single-pot caliper and 280 mm disc. ABS with cornering enhancement is included in the base package.
Price and Availability
Priced at $17,699, the 2023 Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250. Unfortunately, you may choose any color if it’s Vivid Black since that’s the only one available this year.
Harley-Davidson Pan-America vs Triumph Tiger 1200 GT
Neither vehicle has a power edge due to the Trumpet’s 1,160 cc triple, which produces 148 horsepower and 95 pound-feet of torque to about break even. With simple Riding Modes, Traction Control, and ABS, and none of the lean-sensitive sort, the Tiger stumbles slightly in the electronics area.
Triumph makes up for it with electronic suspension controls that are semi-active and automatically adjust damping levels based on demand. The braking components are worthless, but the essential ABS can’t compete with Harley-Davidson’s lean-sensitive fanfare.
Compared to the $19,595 sticker price of the Tiger 1200 GT, H-D wins. The Pan America now seems to be a better bike for less money.
