It’s the first of a brand new generation of Honda touring bikes. The 2022 Honda NT1100 Touring Motorcycle takes the beating core of the CRF1100L Africa Twin and expands upon it to provide a ride that is at once relaxed, quick, and fun. The low seat height, precise steering kinematics, and high-performance chassis make a thrilling sports car. Slim panniers, cruise control, and warming handles are all standard, and a 5-position movable screen and upper/lower wind deflectors provide exceptional aerodynamic efficiency and weather protection at high speeds. In addition to the three preset pedaling settings and two user-defined choices, riders can also take advantage of Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC) and Wheelie Control. The stopping strength comes from four-piston radial-mount brakes up front, and the traction comes from 120/70-17 and 180/55-17 sizes of tires up front and back, respectively. A 6.5-inch LCD panel with Apple Car Play and Android Auto integration finishes the high-end features.
Easygoing, elegant, and pleasurable. In brief, the NT1100. Subtle sophistication in design yields impressive hydrodynamic performance and a comfortable, naturally positioned pedaling posture ideal for long-distance travel. The cyclist is protected by a screen that can be adjusted in height and position in five ways, as well as by higher and lower wind deflectors. Full-color, user-configurable screens are available on the 6.5-inch TFT touchscreen, which also supports Apple Car Play and Android Auto. Standard features include cruise control, warming handles, and large, incorporated panniers.
The NT1100 has a steel semi-double cradle frame with an unusually short wheelbase and pointed turning kinematics. It is suspended using 43mm Showa cartridge-type inverted front forks and a single-tube rear shock. Hydraulic pressure allows for fine-tuning of the rear spring tension. Front brakes are a set of 310mm discs squeezed by 4-piston radial-mount calipers; front tires are 120/70-17 and back tires are 180/55-17.
The twin-cylinder engine is a carryover from the Africa Twin and provides full-fat performance. Still, the intake and exhaust have been adjusted to provide smooth propulsion and a pleasant tone at low revs. The efficient motor enables a range of 400km on a single fill-up, so the speed doesn’t have to come at the expense of a long driving range.
Wheelie Control, complete LED lights, self-canceling signs, and Emergency Stop Indications are all part of the computerized kit. The NT11000 is also compatible with Honda’s six-speed Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT), making it an attractive choice.
2022 Honda NT1100 Touring Motorcycle – Features and Specs
Styling & Equipment
Wind deflectors at the top and bottom of the screen allow for five different height and elevation settings.
Panniers, warming handles, and speed control are all standard features.
The 5 in. LCD screen supports Apple Siri, Android Auto, and Bluetooth.
Includes a USB port, center support, and an ACC port.
The NT1100 was conceived as a sporty, nimble bike that is also comfortable for long periods thanks to its practical, defensive aerodynamics and relaxed handling.
The design is understatedly chic, with smooth, unadorned surfaces that draw attention to crucial facial and body contours. A dynamic beauty characterizes the NT1100’s design language from front to rear. The minimalist design of this motorbike isn’t just for show; it’s meant to improve the rider’s comfort and control.
Upper and lower deflectors shield the user from the elements by wrapping around the upper and lower torso, respectively. There are five different height and elevation settings for the screen, with a total of 164 millimeters separating the highest and most subordinate positions. Depending on how tall you position it, it will blow air over the rider’s head, or low, it will blow air around the rider’s shoulders. It has speed control and heated handles as essential features.
Because of the fairing’s enclosing effect, the user feels ultimately at one with the vehicle. Two can comfortably relax on the 820mm-high seat’s broad, plush cushioning. Passenger-friendly features include a wide grab rail that stretches from the back rack.
The exhaust silencer is also positioned low to allow the most space in the panniers. And one of the NT1100’s most notable characteristics is that removable panniers come as standard equipment. For use in and around the city, they were made as slender as possible, measuring in at a scant 901mm at their broadest. The left pant pocket is 33L and the right is 32L.
The 6.5-inch TFT touchscreen is readable in direct sunlight and provides three screen display options. The GOLD option presents all numerical and mode information. The needles in the tachometer and rpm counter are centered in silver, while the hand in the rev counter is a more subdued bronze. There are three options for the backdrop color: black, white, and the preset configuration. The LCD screen can control your phone thanks to Apple Car Play, Android Auto, and Bluetooth compatibility.
Full LED lights (with DRL), self-canceling signs, and Emergency Stop Indications round out the high-end features. At the same time, a USB port, center support, and an auxiliary power connector (ACC) are included for added convenience.
Chassis
The Africa Twin CRF1100L’s steel semi-double cradle chassis and bolt-on aluminum suspension serve as the basis for the NT1100, which has been field-tested and demonstrated to be reliable and robust. The off-road-ready suspension of its brother has been swapped out for road-focused equipment paired with tighter steering kinematics to fit the general, athletic purpose of the NT1100.
The 150mm of movement and changeable setup of the 43mm Showa cartridge-type inverted front shocks are both impressive features. Similar to the forks, the single-tube, pressurized Showa rear shock has 150mm of shaft movement and a spring that is 14mm in diameter. The spring tension can be adjusted mechanically and wirelessly to facilitate the hauling of a pillion and baggage.
The front wheels are empty in the center because they are made of aluminum that has been finely die-cast around a grit core. The perpendicular attachment of the spokes to the frame in a crossing spoke design provides several advantages, including the dampening of vibrations along a linear path and increased stability in turns. The front tires are 120/70-17 and the back is 180/55-17.
A 1535mm wheelbase, 26.5 degrees of slope, 108mm of a tail, and 175mm of ground clearance are all specified. The MT and DCT NT1100s have the same kern weight of 238 kilograms.
Lightweight 4-piston radial-mount brakes compress dual 310mm front discs. A single-piston brake clamps the 256mm disc in the back. ABS regulates all stopping functions.
Engine
The NT1100 is powered by a tried-and-true unit from the CRF1100L Africa Twin, a 1,084cc SOHC 8-valve parallel twin-cylinder engine capable of 75kW at 7,250rpm and 104Nm at 6,250rpm of peak output. The compression ratio of 10.1:1 remains unchanged. The irregular discharge period and 270-degree staggered crankshaft are also common characteristics.
PGM-FI handles engine control, and the Throttle feeds the throttle bodies by Wire (TBW). The rider will immediately notice that the NT1100’s engine tune is different from that of the Africa Twin. It is because the length of the air intake duct and the internals of the muffler have been optimized to create a pleasing, low-rpm ‘throb’ and smooth, significant acceleration married to relaxed highway cruising, making it ideal for the variety of tasks the NT1100 was designed to perform.
The temperature is built into the cylinder head, and the water pump is inside the clutch housing. The manual and DCT variants of the engine use the same crankcases internally, differing only in terms of internal geometry. The revolving action of the cylinders cancels secondary vibrations, while biaxial balance shafts neutralize primary inertial and coupling vibrations. Balancer rods power the water and lubricant compressors.
Misfire detection, critical for OBD2/EURO5 conformance, is handled by a mechanical pulsar with relator blades spread at 10° intervals. In addition, for EURO-5, Linear Air Flow (LAF) monitors in the exhaust pipelines provide precise readings of the air-to-fuel ratio.
Engine Electronics
TBW manages engine performance and character, including Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC) and Wheelie Control. The user can select one of three pre-set settings, each optimized for a different set of riding circumstances, and one of three control levels for Power and Engine Stopping, with level 1 providing the utmost of either parameter. Level 3 of HSTC and Wheelie Control is the most extreme form of assistance available.
Selected modes are controlled by the switches on the left side of the instrument cluster, and an LED light indicates the presence of HSTC.
The METRO mode is the default, with a medium option for acceleration and deceleration.
When driving on damp or slick terrain, RAIN limits engine power and engine stopping for added safety.
With TOUR, you get full motor strength and the standard engine stopping, allowing you to accelerate quickly, even with a passenger and baggage.
The USER 1 and USER 2 options allow you to switch between different configurations to find the optimal setup for your needs. As soon as the engine is switched on, the USER option is saved so that it doesn’t have to be changed every time.
