2022 Honda CB500X ABS Adventure Motorcycle – Features and Specs
Suspension
Showa 41 mm of Separate Function Fork Big Piston (SFF-BP) USD forks, twin disc front brakes, and radial-mount calipers are some performance-oriented upgrades to Honda’s mini-adventurer. The revised swing arm, which is lighter and has greater lateral flex, also contributes to enhanced handling. Adjustments have been made to the rear shock to go along with the new forks. Changes to the fuel injection settings and a new front wheel design help save weight and enhance the engine’s performance. The front indicator position lights and the LED headlights are brighter, improving visibility.
Launched in 2013 with the naked CB500F and fully-faired CBR500R, the CB500X adds crossover adventure styling to Honda’s fun-focused twin-cylinder ‘light middleweight’ triumvirate. It’s an unassuming motorbike that gets the job done well and can be customized to suit many riders’ preferences.
The practicality of the CB500X can be reduced to a simple formula: a lively, well-regarded twin-cylinder engine that produces actual torque and drives from low rpm, and revs hard up top, combined with a chassis that provides a supremely comfortable ride both in town and on the open highway, all wrapped up in unique adventure styling.
It’s equally at home as a weekday commuter as a weekend getaway vehicle. The long suspension travel smoothes out the bumps in the road; the broad handlebars give you a good grip, and the comfortable, commanding vantage point you get from sitting up high is a bonus. It’s safe to say that the CB500X fulfills the role of an all-rounder.
2016 brought the first significant revision to the CB500X, which included a bigger fuel tank, improved shielding from the wind, and a higher screen. It also has a brake lever and front forks with a spring preload adjustment and LED illumination. The 2019 model year saw the CB500X get refined adventure styling, more engine power, and improved chassis components, ensuring that the bike’s ‘X’ aspect remained intact while also amplifying its already considerable range of capabilities. In the year 2020, it met all requirements for EURO5 compliance.
Showa 41mm SFF-BP USD forks provide premium front suspension, two front discs, a lightweight swing arm, a revised front wheel, and other detail improvements including a stunning new color and bold new graphics for the 2022 model year.
Chassis & Styling
The CB500X’s 35mm diameter steel diamond-tube mainframe remains the same for the 2022 model year; it’s light, sturdy, and designed to offer the rider plenty of input from the road. The stiffness balance of the frame and the design of the engine mounts all contribute to a decrease in vibration.
As can be seen at first glance, the vehicle’s front end has been completely redesigned. To improve the bike’s handling in general, the previous design’s 41mm telescopic forks were swapped out with adjustable spring-preload forks. Showa 41mm SFF-BP Big Piston (SFF-BP) USD forks with 135mm axle travel (150mm cushion stroke) and revised top and bottom yokes. The response time and the ride quality are enhanced by separating the functions, with the Big Piston pressure separation damper in one leg and the spring mechanism in the other.
With its large-diameter piston and 135mm axle travel (60mm cushion stroke), the single-tube rear shock absorber (typical of larger capacity sports bikes) provides excellent response and temperature management thanks to its 5-stage preload adjustment with newly optimized spring rate and damping settings.
The new and better handling is primarily due to the lighter swing arm. For better control, it is now made from 2mm steel (instead of 2.3mm) and has a hollow cross member, making it more robust in rotation while allowing for more lateral flexibility. The revamped aesthetic is finished off with a sleek new chain guard.
The braking performance has been upgraded to match the dynamic upgrades to the chassis and suspension. Dual 296mm wave-pattern discs and axial mounted Nissin two-piston calipers have been installed in favor of the previous design’s single 310mm wave-pattern disc and two-piston caliper in the front. The use of smaller discs not only keeps the overall weight increase to a minimum but also decreases the amount of force needed to apply the brakes.
Reduced unsprung weight is one way the revised 19-inch cast aluminum front wheel improves maneuverability. It has a 17-inch rear wheel and is topped by a solid new mudguard design; the front tires are 110/80-R19 and the rear are 160/60-R17, both in the trail pattern. The bias in the weights has also been addressed. Front/rear bias proportion of 48.7/51.3, which is a slight improvement over the previous 48/52. 199 kg curb weight. The same 27.5 degrees of rake and 108 millimeters of the trail are maintained with the same 1,445-millimeter wheelbase.
The lengthy radiator shrouds and fairing give the CB500X a rich three-dimensional texture from front to back, joined by interlocking side covers and the fuel tank, giving it an aggressive, “ready for the wild” adventure flair. It is not just a pretty bike, however; the high-pressure air flowing around the fairing and screen (which can be adjusted in height from 1445mm to 1410mm) helps shield the rider from the wind at highway speeds. With the addition of extra-bright LEDs, the already-piercing headlight is much more so, and the front indicator position lights improve visibility even more.
The seat’s low profile facilitates maneuverability around the machine and proximity to the ground: a maneuverable 38 degrees separate center and full lock on the steering wheel.
The heightened sense of command provided by the gunmetal gray tapered steel grips is unmatched. The 830mm-high seat and the resulting upright riding posture are highly friendly and provide exceptional vision. The overall measurements are 2155mm, 830mm, and 1410mm, and the vehicle has a ground clearance of 180mm.
Gear Position and Shift Up indicators are shown on LCD gauges embedded in a complexly textured and surfaced frame; they are initially set at 8,750rpm but may be changed in 250rpm increments over the range of 5-8,750rpm.
A good fuel efficiency of 3.6L/100km (27.8km/l) (WMTC mode) and a 17.5L (including reserve) fuel tank allows for a range of 485km.
Engine
The CB500X’s 471cc, 8-valve liquid-cooled parallel twin-cylinder architecture is ideal for riders with an A2 license since it provides a good compromise between compact dimensions and a satisfying power level. The 2019 enhancements improved acceleration by increasing low- and midrange power and torque by 4% between 3,500 and 7,000 rpm. Even though it has a modest power output, the engine’s personality and performance more than make up for its tiny size. The 35 kW of peak power is available at 8,600 rpm, while the 43 Nm of peak torque is available at 6,500 rpm.
In 2022, new settings increased torque feel and character without sacrificing performance by redirecting airflow more or less directly via the air box and throttle bodies to the PGM-FI fuel injection. The two exit pipes on the exhaust muffler provide a sporty edge to each thump and produce a raspy scream at high RPMs. Reduced by 92g without sacrificing its cooling power is a new radiator design that is also more visually attractive.
The bike features a compression ratio of 10.7:1, a bore and stroke of 67mm x 66.8mm, a crankshaft with pins phased at 180 degrees, and a main couple-balancer behind the cylinders and near the bike’s center of gravity. Scissor gears are used for the main and the balancer, making the system quieter. The crank counterweight is lightweight and contoured for couple-balance, allowing the engine to spin quickly with little resistance.
A stressed part, the engine adds to the frame’s stiffness through four frame hangers on the cylinder head. The roller rocker arms within the cylinder head are light thanks to the shim-type valve adjustment, reducing valve-spring load and friction.
Vanadium coats the pins of a silent (SV Chain) cam chain, making it more resistant to wear and minimizing friction. The diameter of the inlet valve is 26.0mm, and the diameter of the exhaust valve is 21.5mm.
The “noise” that pistons may produce at high rpm is minimized by carefully designing the piston’s form. Striations on the skirt of the piston help reduce friction. Crankshaft, main shaft, and countershaft are all compactly arranged in a ‘triangle’ for maximum efficiency. Crankcases with thin-walled sleeves made in a centrifugal casting process minimize ‘pumping’ losses caused by a 180° phased firing sequence. The oil volume is 3.2 liters, and the deep sump helps to keep things from sloshing around during sharp turns and stops. An assist/slipper clutch controls the smooth-shifting six-speed gearbox.
