Interview with a Ducati hero: Troy Bayliss
Despite suffering a double whammy on his debut in Japan and winning three unforgettable World SBK Championships, Troy Bayliss is a perfect example of Ducati’s Never Give Up ethic embedded in DNA. According to the Australian rider at the unveiling of the new Ducati Panigale V2 Bayliss 1st Championship 20th Anniversary, “The colors red and number 21 symbolize a unique, practically irreplaceable collaboration that has also won the battle of time.
“A story that seems to go on forever”
Troy, you won your first World SBK Championship twenty years ago. How do you feel
It doesn’t look like 20 years have passed. When you are having fun, time flies! And over the years, the same thing has happened. I first raced Ducati with a private team in 1998, and we won the British Superbike Championship with this squad. I joined the World Championship squad in 2000, and Ducati has been a part of my life ever since. Along with this process, there have been many ups and downs, but it seems that it will never stop.
Which of these years would you choose if you had to?
Naturally, you never forget to win your first world championship because you learn to do it and then work hard to keep it going. It was a memory for me that we could accomplish that a few more times. But there were so many incredible moments throughout the trip that it would be hard to name just a few. The moment I crossed the finish line with the third world title in Portimao, Portugal in 2008, knowing that it was my last ride at the highest level and the end of my existence in Europe, is perhaps the best memory I have. I will never forget it
I was born to compete and succeed together.
With three different Ducati races, you prevailed. Which is your favorite.
I liked the numbers 996, 999 and 1098. It doesn’t matter which version I ride; I always feel comfortable and as if the bike was made just for me.
What do you think of the 20th anniversary of the brand-new Panigale V2 Bayliss First Championship?
It, in my opinion, reflects our previous work together. The new bike with V-twin and trellis frame looks excellent because my time and career were spent on V-twin. Of course, improvements are made over time.
