As a tribute to our heritage and the unique symbols of our business, we created the R 18 model. Consequently, the 2021 R18 BMW Heritage Motorcycle is a distinctive cruiser with a boxer engine of unprecedented displacement and classic styling cues like the white double striping. Since 1923, we have relied on the boxer.
In terms of displacement, the R 18’s 1802 ccm two-cylinder boxer engine is the largest we have ever developed. At 3000 rpm, it reaches its peak torque of 158 Nm. It has a constant torque output of 150 Nm between 2,000 and 4,000 rpm, typical of a boxer engine.
The Big Boxer generates 67 kW while spinning at 4750 rpm (91 hp). The result is a marriage of old-world craftsmanship and cutting-edge innovation for those who want to experience the road in a way that’s pure and simple.

Supreme Cruiser with Historical Roots
The R 18 is BMW Motorrad’s first foray into the cruiser market. This model is unlike any previous BMW motorbike before it, both in terms of design flair and technology. Both mechanically and artistically, it pulls from well-known models such as the BMW R 5 and shifts its attention back to the motorcycle essentials: pure, no-frills technology and the boxer engine as the core of riding enjoyment, along with “pleasant vibrations.”
In addition, the 2021 R18 BMW Heritage Motorcycle’s traditional styling is complemented by clean, modern technology, resulting in an intriguing overall idea and a riding sensation that is equal parts refined and dynamic.
Powerful BMW Boxer Engine
The “Big Boxer” 2-cylinder boxer engine is the centerpiece of the new 2021 R18 BMW Heritage Motorcycle. Air-cooled boxer engines have been the backbone of BMW Motorrad’s riding pleasure since the company’s inception in 1923, and the i8 continues that legacy. 1 802 cc is the displacement of the most powerful 2-cylinder boxer engine ever utilized in motorcycle series manufacturing.
Maximum power is 91 HP at 4,750 RPM. Throughout the rev range, between 2,000 RPM – 4,000 RPM, there is more than 150Nm of torque available that is matched with a rich, resonant sound.
Frame and Rear swingarm
In the new 2021 R18 BMW Heritage Motorcycle, a double-loop steel tube frame serves as the heart of the suspension’s design. With this frame style, BMW Motorrad has had a long history. Unobtrusive elements like the welded seams between steel tubes and the cast or forged sections demonstrate the exceptional quality of the production process and the rigorous attention to detail.
The rear swingarm, which is similar to the classic BMW R 5, uses bolted connections to enclose the rear axle gearbox originally.
Wire-spoked Wheels and Disc Brakes
The new 2021 R18 BMW Heritage Motorcycle’s suspension components purposefully exclude electronic adjustment options. Instead, a telescopic fork and a directly fixed central suspension strut with travel-dependent damping and adjustable spring preload provide excellent wheel control and pleasing suspension comfort.
Like the iconic BMW R 5, the fork tubes are covered in fork sleeves. Front and rear suspension travel are 120 and 90 millimeters, respectively, with a fork tube diameter of 49 millimeters. Four-piston fixed calipers with a double-disc brake at the front and single disc brake at the back make up the new 2021 R18 BMW Heritage Motorcycle’s braking system. As a result, the wire-spoked wheels give the vehicle a sleek and fashionable look.
Harmonious Ergonomics
The new 2021 R18 BMW Heritage Motorcycle has “mid-mounted footpegs” in line with BMW Motorrad’s concept, a laid-back footrest posture. Classic BMW positioning allows you an aggressive and relaxing riding posture for maximum bike control.
A wide range of riding modes, including MSR and ASC, is standard. Hillstart Control and Reverse Assist are legal factory options. Three basic riding modes (Rain, Roll and Rock) are now available on the new 2021 R18 BMW Heritage Motorcycle so that riders may tailor their experience to their tastes. ASC (Automatic Stability Control, disengageable) is included as standard equipment, ensuring a high degree of driver safety. As a standard feature, the new R 18 has engine drag torque control (MSR). Additionally, the Hill Start Control feature makes it easier to get started on a steep slope.
A Distinctive Design
The 2021 R18 BMW Heritage Motorcycle is a brilliant reinterpretation of a bygone era’s distinctive appearance, preserving a minimalist aesthetic in numerous elements inspired primarily by classics like the BMW R 5. Functional and aesthetically pleasing features harken homage to the renowned Boxer from 1936, including the double-loop frame, pear-drop tank, open-running driveshaft, and pinstriped paintwork (ex-factory option).
As befits an absolute classic, the 2021 R18 BMW Heritage Motorcycle’s vintage bodywork characteristics also comprise metal. Additionally, the suspension is suggestive of the venerable R 5. The R 5’s rigid-frame design is brought right up to date with the addition of a cantilever suspension strut and a double-sided swingarm.
Unique Paint and Chrome Color Scheme
From the start, the new 2021 R18 BMW Heritage Motorcycle will be available only as an R 18 First Edition model in specific regions throughout the globe, with a regular model also available in those markets. It has a traditional black exterior with white pinstripes and an appearance reminiscent of the R 18 concept vehicle. A seat emblem and a “First Edition” chrome clasp on the side covers round off the chrome accents.
Customization and Individualization
The new 2021 R18 BMW Heritage Motorcycle features a more conversion-friendly design than practically any other motorcycle. It was emphasized even in the design stages of the basic motorcycle layout. Consequently, it comes with an easy-to-disassemble painted component set and a detachable rear frame.
Higher or lower handlebars may be easily installed using hydraulic lines and cable harnesses that are correctly attached to the hydraulic lines of the brake and clutch. For further convenience, the oil chamber is situated outside the areas where the cylinder head covers and belt cover are visible (engine housing covers).
