An all-new 2020 V-STROM 1050XT Suzuki Adventure Bike comes with a liquid-cooled, DOHC, 1037cc, V-twin, 90-degree engine that offers more horsepower with the same level of torque and fuel economy while achieving worldwide emission standards. The perfect primary balance is given by the 90-degree, L-twin design that negates the need for balancer shafts or rubber mounting, as the new engine has smooth power pulses.
All-new higher compression pistons were engineered using FRM analysis that achieves ideal rigidity, weight, and improved durability. The new piston move within Suzuki Composite Electrochemical Material (SCEM)-plated cylinder bores are integrated into the upper crankcase for low weight, more excellent durability, minimum friction, and outstanding heat dissipation. The exhaust and intake camshaft are changed, so the valve lift is increased, and the valve-timing has less overlap to enhance engine power while reducing fuel consumption.
The engine comes with the new Ride-by-Wire throttle system that is lighter, simpler, and highly compact than the previous mechanical throttle. Each cylinder is fed by the larger bore electronic-controlled throttle bodies of 49mm, slightly more significant than the last 2019 Suzuki V-Strom 1050XT. The throttle bodies come with a single butterfly valve opened and closed by its independent motor for accurate throttle control. Since the Ride-by-Wire system does not have mechanical cables, the throttle feels to the rider is smooth, linear, and light. With no wires connected to the throttle grip, the installation of the Suzuki accessory heated grip set is simplified.
Each engine’s cylinder comes with a 10-hole fuel injector, positioned downstream of the throttle body on the intake manifold that makes good fuel atomization for greater combustion efficiency and low fuel consumption. The latest Engine Control Module (ECM) comes with a faster processor and new programming to efficiently operate the fuel-injection system, cruise control, ignition, and other electrical features on the V-Strom 1050XT.
An all-new transistorized digital ignition system independently fires the dual spark plugs in each cylinder head for complete combustion by ignition the mixture at the ideal moment. The new twin iridium-type spark plugs are used in the Dual Spark Plug System to provide a more compressed and hotter spark, yet they have a longer life than conventional plugs. The Suzuki Ease Start System lets the rider quickly start the engine with just a single press of a start button. There is no need to hold down its starter button until the engine fires. The new Easy Start is managed by the ECM so that the starter motor automatically stops once the engine has started. The Suzuki V-Strom features Automatic Idle Speed Control (ISC) that maintains a stable machine idle under all conditions.
The ISC is the key to the V-Strom’s Low RPM Assist feature that carefully adjusts engine speed during takeoff and low-speed riding to deliver smooth power, and it helps in reducing the possibility of the rider stalling the bike. An all-new refined, single-silencer exhaust configuration decreases weight, and it has a lower center of gravity that helps in handling, maneuverability, and luggage mounting. The exhaust of the Suzuki V-Strom is updated with the new high-efficiency catalyzer that achieves an adequate level of emission control and offering good flow to match the improved engine performance.
An all-new Suzuki Pulsed Secondary Air Injection (PAIR) system comes standard, and it is matched with its efficient exhaust. This system injects fresh air into the exhaust ports to satisfy various international standards without sacrificing performance.
The Suzuki V-Strom radiator comes with 15% more cooling capacity that accommodates the higher engine output. The coolant temperature is stabilized with the help of a thermostatically controlled cooling fan. The new liquid-cooled oil cooler is positioned where the oil filter is attached to the engine. The new cooler requires less space and is incredibly compact and lightweight, offering lower temperature lubrication for a powerful engine.
The transmission system comes with the six-speed close-ratio transmission, which is managed by Suzuki Clutch Assist System (SCAS). It works like a slipper clutch by allowing a small amount of clutch slip to enable smooth downshifts. It works like an assist clutch that makes the clutch lever pull light and precise. To accent the engine, the new bronze finishing was applied on its cylinder head covers, magneto cover, clutch cover, and water pump case for a striking contrast with the black crankcase.
Electronic Features
The new 2020 V-STROM 1050XT Suzuki Adventure Bike comes with an integrated Suzuki Intelligent Ride System (SIRS) with an updated Motion Track Anti-Lock and Hill Hold Control System Combination Brake System, Load Dependent Control System, and Slope Dependent Control System assists braking performance in a variety of conditions.
The new 2020 V-STROM 1050XT Suzuki Adventure Bike is always ready for SIRS that includes a new cruise control system, Suzuki Drive Mode Selector (S-DMS), and fully updated Traction Control System. Each element of the S.I.R.S offers V-Strom 1050XT riders stress-free use and convenience during long-distance rides.
The Controller Area Network (CAN) technology comes as standard that is an interconnected information network instead of a conventional wiring harness. Since it requires fewer wires, it allows the vehicle to be lighter and more straightforward and offers advanced components such as the cruise control – on the motorcycle to have faster data transmission with the ECM. The CAN wiring provides a single location for diagnosing any errors that occur throughout the entire network.
The Inertial Measurement Unit is also essential to SIRS; it measures six directions of movement along three axes and detects pitch, roll, and yaw movement based on the bike’s position, training, and acceleration. All-new high-performance six-direction IMU is supplied by Bosch. It helps in a three-axis angular rate sensor and a three-axis acceleration sensor in a single compact unit.
The new cruise control system maintains the selected road speed without the rider holding the throttle open. It is a welcome feature for long-distance riding that helps in reducing fatigue. The new 2020 V-STROM 1050XT Suzuki Adventure Motorcycle comes with arrays of elements and technology, such as the new Ride-by-Wire throttle system and ECM that allow the addition of this easy-to-use cruise control.
The cruising speed can be set at a different speed, i.e., 30 MPH to 100 MPH in fourth gear or higher. There is a button on the proper handlebar control that can be pressed to put cruise control into standby and the rocker-style selector switch on the left handlebar control allows the rider to adjust the speed up or down. The cruise control function icons and indicators are positioned on the new instrument panel.
An all-new Motion Track Anti-Lock and Combination Brake System (ABS) comes as standard, and they both measure spatial information of the bike’s posture in conjunction with the front and rear wheel speeds. It helps the ABS to activate in a straight line and during turns as well. The riders can choose between two different levels of ABS activation sensitivity, and the function of ABS is visible on the new multifunctional instrument panel.
The new Suzuki Drive Mode Selector (S-DMS) comes with three-mode settings that help the rider select the engine’s power delivery characteristics to match riding ability and conditions. Furthermore, working in concert with Traction Control System, S-DMS permits peak power in each mode while altering the nature of power delivery.
The Traction Control System was debuted on the 2014 Suzuki V-Strom 1000, and the updated version is available in a four-mode system that helps the rider in controlling the throttle with confidence by reducing rear wheel spin in a variety of riding conditions. The system monitors the front and rear wheel speeds, throttle opening, transmission gear, and engine speed. It quickly decreases engine output when it detects wheel spin by adjusting ignition timing and air delivery. The rider can opt between four modes i.e., 1, 2, 3 and off. The first three modes differ in terms of rear wheel spin sensitivity.
The Hill Hold Control system is the most helpful in hilly areas, and it plays an important role when stopping upward on a hill and applying the brakes. It automatically operates the rear brake for around 30 seconds to prevent the bike from rolling back down the hill or mountain, even if the rider releases the brake lever or pedal. The system helps the rider to focus on smoother takeoff when on the hillside. When the rider release the brake lever or foot pedal, the ECM detects the rider’s intention to ride forward and smoothly releases the rear brake pressure. The rider can also turn off the Hill Hold System by pressing the front brake lever twice or use the left handlebar control and an instrument panel with the system off.
All-new Slope Dependent Control System constantly monitors the posture of the bike even when the motorcycle is traveling downhill. When the rider activates the brake lever or pedal when riding downhill, the electronic control unit adjusts the brake pressure to prevent rear wheel lift.
Another essential control system comes as standard, i.e., Load Depended Control System. It helps the rider achieve optimal braking in response to the load on the bike, plus it receives the optimal amount of information from IMU and hydraulic brake pressure. It constantly learns about braking deceleration as the load’s weight increases or decreases when riding with cargo or passengers. It retains the information to improve braking performance as the load on the bike increases.
