Comparative sport GT motorcycle tires : How we proceeded
The adventures started as of our search for a site of test, that is to say a track with constant watering and a track of wet braking. And those centers having this kind of installation are not legion: Dunlop with Mireval, Michelin with Ladoux, Metzeler in Italy close to Milan, Continental in Hanover in Germany and Bridgestone in Italy.
After grinds requests, we finally received a positive response of Bridgestone, which accommodated for the first time professional media French motorcycle, in its center of test tire close to the town of Aprilia, in the south of Rome.
Like motorcycle of test tire, we retained excellent Honda CB1000R (in double specimen), a popular motorcycle in France, equipped with an amply sufficient power and a couple to maltreat gums, as well as braking powerful ABS. An ideal choice,Honda CB1000R showed so neutral and precise behavior which it constituted allied invaluable for our testers, allowing them to concentrate only on the tires.
The tires of this comparative were initially provided by the manufacturers, then exchanged by our care with tires commercial directly in dealers, by taking care to check the DOWRY of the tires obtained (so that they are not old tires), and also by throwing an eye on their conditions of storage.
2 motorcycles, 2 testers, 6 mount tires, tracks wet, measurements and tests… as a blind man
Two Honda CB1000R ABS were entrusted to Christophe (1.69 m, 70 kg not equipped), permanent journalist of the drafting of bikescatalog.com. He is fond of the motorcycles of road, and rather felt tires known as progressive and attentive. David (1.76 m, 85 kg not equipped), the second tester, rolls to the daily newspaper and practical the circuit, in leisure and competition.
For the need of this comparative sport GT motorcycles tires, we have two wet tracks of test. The first is appeared as a classical track speed with a device of pumps guaranteeing a constant watering. We buckled sessions of 10/12 turns, before returning to raise our impressions. The use of second track makes it possible to test braking, also equipped with a system of constant watering and several types of bitumen, with variable levels of adherence. We chose bitumen known as “concrete”, equivalent to classical bitumen of Western Europe.
The motorcycles are equipped with our equipment making it possible to measure speed and the distance covered between two points. We carried out 4 tests per set of tires. The temperature of the tires (on the level of the tread, factor more speaking) is measured cold by Mehdi, then after each return in the box. It also controls the pressure applied in the pneumatic tires, namely the pressure recommended by the manufacturer of motorcycles, that is to say 2.5 AV, 2.9 AR.
The manufacturers besides this wished that this same pressure would be applied so that none of them is favored. Mehdi carries out a test with the udometer in order to check the differences in hardness of gums of the tires then takes the role of blind dog to guide us towards the motorcycles. It is him who determines the order of passage of the tires and carries out the catches of sights. Last precision of the more high importance, we produced this comparative tires motorcycle sport-GT as a blind man, i.e. without knowing in advance which tires we were going to judge.
